Remember when...

It wasn't long ago when we had views like this from the ole porthole.

Another Fire Truck

On November 5th, the Falls fire dept came to our house.  Don't worry it wasn't an emergency.  They have a great program where they will come out and install smoke detectors.  They provided and installed 5 smoke detectors in our house.  It is a great program for the community.

The Season of Fall

There hasn't been to much going on around here from the Porthole. The neighbor sill mows his yard with his shirt off and the blue car still doing 2 or 3 laps in about 10 minutes a couple of times a day. I told Delilah that one of these days when I'm outside and see him coming down the road I'm going to position myself at the intersection and ask loudly what the deal is with him doing laps past my house. I almost had the opportunity to do it but I couldn't get to the intersection in time. Speaking of Delilah, I asked her contribute to this blog and she has yet to do so.
We were taking a walk several weeks ago and the neighbors diagonally across the street from us ran into us and commented on the yard. They said that the yard we starting to look really nice. I'm glad they are happy with the progress made so far.
Like I said there hasn't been much to observe through the porthole.

The Blue Car

For a couple of months now, we have noticed a guy driving blue Corolla doing laps past our house. For example, he drove past our house at 12:02 pm and 12:08 pm and 12:12 pm one afternoon. Last week I ran a few errands after picking up Jude from school. I tend to back into our driveway and into the garage to make easier to get the kids out and when leaving. I pulled up to the curb and started backing into the driveway and noticed the blue car pass me. Ah ha, I thought. I decided to follow the blue to see where exactly it goes on these laps he takes. So I followed it. 2 right turns, 6 left turns and 9 minutes later I was back in front of our house following the blue car on a second lap. On the second trip around he cut his route short and I saw him turning into his driveway.

His routine does not just happen once a day. I have noticed him driving past our house on 3 separate occurrences during various days. He usually drives past twice but sometimes he will drive past 3 times during each occurrence. We can hear his music blasting and see him smoking his cigarettes. He likes to listen to an array of music from classical to rock.

Oh, the things we see from the Porthole.

Woodpecker

Since our house is in close proximity to the metro park we are privileged to see many different types of birds. This is a picture of our woodpecker. We believe it is a downy woodpecker because it seems to have a short bill. We know this much, it's either a downy woodpecker or a hairy woodpecker.

No Shirt?

If you live somewhere in the Midwest I'm positive you felt the effects of Ike like we did. It was so windy it was unbelievable. Around our neighborhood a lot of smaller branches have been knocked loose from the trees and have fallen to the ground. We were fortunate in the fact that we did not loose power. A couple of times last night the lights flickered and I was certain the power would follow soon afterward. To my surprise it did not.
This evening while we were waiting for the soup to finish its course of cooking on the stove top, Delilah and I were watch the traffic past our house and we noticed our neighbor outside picking up sticks, he eventually got around to mowing his yard. Now, this particular neighbor likes to mow his yard and do yard work with his shirt off. Amazingly he does not have a tan from the whole summer of mowing his yard with out a shirt. It doesn't bother us that he mows his yard with out a shirt. But today, as I mentioned earlier in this post he was outside with out his shirt on and it was like 64 degrees. So I decided to head outside after dinner while he was finishing up mowing his lawn. I had my shorts and t-shirt on and I felt it was chilly.

Excitement

These were actually taken back on August 13. The local fire department was performing techinal training exercises in the metro park. We just happen to live really close to an entrance to the metro park.
